4 Ways to Conquer Productivity Killers Episode 24

If you are like me there have been many times when you’ve worked hard a whole day and felt like you got nothing accomplished. There were distractions, meetings and drains on your time. I call these the productivity killers that live in your workplace.

On today’s episode of the Solutions Oriented Leader Podcast we are going to discuss four ways that you can conquer productivity killers and create more time to accomplish your most important goals and objectives with ease.

The 4 ways to conquer your productivity Killers:

  1. Use a time log to track your time and find out what the biggest drain on your productivity and time are throughout the week. If you do this I guarantee you will find several hours of wasted time that you can refocus to be more productive in the future.

  1. Give yourself a break! Taking a break throughout the day for as little as 10 minutes can help increase your productivity and decrease your stress levels. Go out and get some fresh air, stretcher muscles and come back ready to rock.

  1. Make sure that your meetings are productive. Wherever I speak I hear CEOs and leaders complain about the number of meetings and the time that is wasted in them. Make sure that you have a focused agenda and you know what you want to accomplish before you even begin the meeting. As many people know I’m also a big fan of the morning huddle a 15 minute meeting three times a week accomplishes a lot more than a long drawn out meeting in the middle of the day.

 4. Start with the one task that you dislike the most often is one of       the most important tasks that you can accomplish in a day.             Another great thing to do is tackle 3 to 4 mini tasks which will         also give you motivation and make you feel good about yourself.

How to Build Your Personal Brand Episode 23

In Today’s world the top leaders develop and protect their personal brand biggest thing know we could make them a fortune or lose everything for them in an instant. Discover six ways that you can build your personal brand that will make you stand above the crowd.

There are a number of reasons why your personal brand is so important for you as a leader. It’s not just for entrepreneurs, C-suite executives and politicians anymore. It is something that all leaders should take seriously if they want to help to motivate their team and grow their business.

Here are six steps you can take immediately to build your personal brand:

  1. Do a self-assessment before you start branding yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses and where do you add value to an organization?

  1. Make sure to memorialize everything by writing it out! This is something personal so you don’t have to share with everyone. It will just help you to clarify who you are and what your team leadership style truly is.

  1. Decide how you are going to establish your thought leadership. Your personal brand needs to be in a consumable form for people to know who you are and what you are all about. This may mean keynote speeches, blogs, or any other form of social media or podcasting.

  1. Make sure to have an elevator pitch. This means when you meet someone whether it’s in an elevator or for a couple of minutes and they ask you what you what you do for living, you can explain with ease

  1. Always be authentic, or like I say be Real! People do business with people who they like or like them! It’s important to be honest and transparent in all of your communications especially when conveying your personal brand.

  1. Make sure to always be consistent! Always do what you say you’re going to do and make sure you always show up when you say you’re going to show up!

If you can implement the simple six steps your personal brand will quickly improve and your career Will surely advance!

How to Become an Effective Team Leader Episode 21

As an executive coach and consultant, I’m constantly asked by new team leaders and veteran team leaders about what they can do to become more effective. In this episode of the Solutions Oriented Leader Podcast I am going to share with you seven key steps you can take to become a more effective leader right away!

The best transformational leaders I know provide vision and motivation to their teams. They are certainly not perfect leaders however; they focus on constant improvement. There are seven key steps that you can take to become a more effective leader right away whether you were just beginning on your journey to become a more effective leader or are already a veteran leader who is looking to improve their skills.

  1. Understand your own leadership style by undergoing a self-assessment. It’s important to know the style of leadership that you use, whether your introvert or extrovert or someone who likes to delegate versus someone whose a micromanager. If you’re not sure asking friend and tell them to be honest!

  1. The best transformational leaders make time in their schedule to lead. I like to take what I call a walkabout in the morning and greet each and every team member to see if they need any help. Most of the time the answer is no, however I wanted to know that I have their back and that I’m interested in what they’re doing.

  1. You must have a good understanding of your people exclamation point! Transformational leaders take the time to engage with each member of their team really getting to know them. It’s important to another strengths and weaknesses so that you could focus them on their highest and best use within the team structure.

  1. The best team leaders know how to communicate effectively. It is critical that you’re intentional and the way you communicate. (https://www.rickgoodman.com/build-better-culture-key-communication/ ) Make sure you set expectations and let your team know when is the best time to communicate with you so that you could be one-on-one focused with that member of the team
  2. Transformational leaders are always setting the example for others. “Your team goes where you go” as I always say! They will be constantly looking at your every move so you need to set the example if you want them to follow.

  1. The most effective team leaders know the importance of delegation. Many times we have people on our team that can do a better job than we can. After all when the team does well the team leader looks the best. It’s important to build trust and your team, after all if you can’t trust your team members they shouldn’t be on your team.

  1. The best leaders make rapid decisions! After all you got a 50-50 shot if you get it wrong and make a new decision. As I say the baseball players that are in the Hall of Fame struck out 70% of the time. If you have a 300-lifetime batting average you’re most likely in the baseball Hall of Fame. However, if you don’t get up to the plate and take a swing you have no chance of getting a hit.

If you can implement these seven key steps right away you will already be in the process of becoming a more effective team leader!

Five Key Benefits of Employee Engagement - Episode 20

Your team is your company’s most valuable asset! That’s why it’s so important for you as a leader to care about employee engagement. Today I’m going to share with you five key benefits of an employee engagement program and why you need to have one immediately if you want to retain your best people and attract new talent into your organization.

The five key benefits to employee engagement:

  1. Engagement helps increase productivity. Employees were highly engaged and have a sense of purpose and contribution on the team tend to work harder which leads to more productivity.

  1. Engaged employees have a stronger sense of the company mission and vision. When employees are engaged you can keep everybody on the same page, focused towards the same goals and end results.

  1. The more employees are engaged the more creative they become. When employees are engaged, they tend to brainstorm ideas and come up with new ways of doing things. Unengaged employees go through the motions or as I say “they look like they’re doing time”.

  1. With an increasing employee engagement there is a decrease in employee turnover. When employees feel like they are part of the team and they’re appreciated for their dedication and hard work they don’t quit. In fact, those employees tend to refer other team members that are just as good if not better than they are!

  1. Your clients and customers will know what difference if your employees are engaged and support the company mission. Employees were engaged tend to offer a higher level of customer experience. They also tend to be happier and more willing to solve problems which leads to customer satisfaction.

So, you can see how important employee engagement is to the bottom line in any organization. To find out more about implementing an employee engagement program you can contact us at info@RickGoodman.com Or call us at 888-267-6098

The Number One Way to Connect with Your Team Episode 15

Today on the Solutions Oriented Leader Podcast we are going to discuss the number one way you can connect and engage with your team!

Are you communicating and connecting with the people on your team?

Are you talking more than you're listening

In today's email driven world communication is sometimes a one-way conversation instead of a dialogue.

We need to have more conversations with the people on our team and create more of a dialogue to get the information that might possibly take us to the next level.

The reality is that the people doing work for us are in touch with what they're doing on a regular basis.

Sometimes they see things that us leaders don't generally see so we've got to have that dialogue, that conversation and it's the best way to get feedback from the people on your team.

Just remember what my grandmother says we have two ears and one mouth to listen twice as much as we speak.

When you start to listen twice as much as you use too, you can start to hear twice as much as you've heard before and you'll be able to take action on twice as many projects than you ever have before.

The end results double the production, success and satisfaction.

How to Use Conflict to Make a Connection -Episode 14

How to Use Conflict to Make a Connection!

Many times, leaders would rather avoid conflict than to confront it. As I said before I believe that conflict can be good and can even help us to make a connection with our team. On this episode of the solutions oriented leader podcast we are going to discuss how we can take conflict and use it to make a connection by taking a number of steps.

It's always important to start with a self-assessment and look in the mirror to decide what type of personality do you have and what is the best way that people can communicate with you. Once you have this figured out you need to communicate that to your employees.

It's also important to be mindful of your habits and communicate them to your teammates and family and remember that people think and buy from emotion. So, if you truly want to connect with people even when you're involved in the conflict you have to think about your emotions and also their emotions.

When a transformational leader begins to confront conflict, they will soon start to see conflict dissipate and engagement in connection begin.

Check out this episode to find out more how you can use conflict to make a connection.

Seven Traits of a Resilient Leader - Episode 12

The Seven Traits of a Resilient Leader

Many studies have indicated the importance of resilience is both an individual and leadership trait. On today’s solutions-oriented leader podcast you will discover seven traits of resilient leader. A resilient leader is a person who sees failure as temporary setbacks and they believe they can recover from them quickly. They always maintain a positive attitude and a strong sense of opportunity during tough times.

When a resilient leader faces a roadblock, they find a way to move forward and avoid getting stuck. Many resilient leaders are also transformational leaders who are constantly looking to develop other leaders in their organizations who could provide solutions that achieve excellent results.

Here is a list of the Seven Traits of a Resilient Leader:

  1. Powerful Communication:

Resilient Leaders have an ability to communicate their message in a powerful manner so that their team members understand the challenges of any situation and are developing solutions for a positive outcome.

  1. Resilient Leaders Are Coachable:

Any great athlete or entertainer or businessperson knows the importance of constant improvement. This is the case for resilient leaders they are open to feedback and often ask others for feedback also. Once they receive the feedback, they also demonstrate an ability to take action in a positive way. They are truly transformational leaders.

  1. They Are Risk Takers:

Resilient leaders understand that with no risk there is no reward they understand that to be very successful you have to take risks sometimes. They understand if you continue to do the same thing you can get stuck in a rut.

  1. They Develop Other Leaders:

Resilient Leaders understand the importance of developing other leaders. Developing everyone helps them to learn from their mistakes. It is been demonstrated that leaders who want feedback for themselves are more likely to give productive feedback and coaching to others, because they want honest feedback as well.

  1. They Believe in Change:

Resilient Leaders overruling the change in their able to provide leadership to ensure that the organizational culture is one that is change oriented. Resilient leaders embrace change and also encourage other members of their team to embrace change also.

  1. They Are Relationship Builders:

Resilient Leaders build strong teams by creating strong and positive relationships with members of their team. Individuals may be willing to make changes but requires a positive environment and supportive relationships to be able to make that change successfully.

  1. They Are Decisive:

Resilient Leaders understand that making decisions is always difficult because no person has all the data or understands everything. They also understand that organizations cannot move forward until a decision gets made. The most resilient leaders are effective at making decisions moving forward. They make the wrong decision; they are quick to make a different decision and move in another direction.

Building Your Team with Remote Employees - Episode 11

Building Your Team with Remote Employees

I believe that if you are going to have remote employees you must bring them together for a team building exercise at minimum once a year. When done right, these activities can improve communication, foster cohesion, and bolster morale.

It’s a lot harder to include employees in your group activities when those employees don’t work in the same building—or in some cases, when they don’t even work in the same town!

Here are three quick solution to help you build virtual or remote teams successfully.

Build Rapport One of the disadvantages of being a remote employee is that you don’t get to participate in everyday small talk, like on-campus employees do. Make it a point to go around to each employee, and especially each remote employee, and ask them something about their family or about how their week is going.

Set up meetings off-site. With Wi-Fi accessibility, it’s easier than ever for your employees to spend an hour or two working outside the office—in a Starbucks, for instance. This can be a good way to include employees who live in the same community but don’t come into the office each day. Set up an afternoon for employees to get together in an external location—somewhere the remote employees can be in the mix!

Create a Buddy or Mentor System A simple suggestion: If you have a project requiring two people, encourage one in-house person to work alongside a remote employee. Have them get together over Skype or Facetime to work on the assignment together. Simply facilitating these partnerships can be very valuable to building team cohesion!

Of course, one final suggestion is to contact a team building expert who can come in and make some specific recommendations—and that’s something I’d love to help with. Reach out now and let’s talk about your company culture and team building needs.

5 Tips To Make Your Day More Productive Episode 10

5 Tips for Making Your Day More Productive

I’ve talked before about the importance of having the right morning routine—It’s not enough to have a to-do list these days. What we really need to do is think about when you’re going to do things according to highest and best use of our time

Here are Five Actions that you can take to make your day more productive!

Plan your weeks in advance. Let’s start with the big picture: You should begin each week with a clear agenda, including the major projects you need to complete or commitments you need to uphold. Write down what your main areas of focus need to be each day and stick to it.

Set daily goals. It’s good to have long-term goals, but I also recommend having three to five main things you want to achieve each day. Review those items as your day begins, and block it off in your schedule. It’s always wise to structure your day around the biggest goals.

Schedule uninterrupted work time. You can’t simply hope for a block of time to do creative work and get things done. You actually put it on your schedule, then turn off your phone and desktop alerts so that you can make it happen. Many studies suggest the  best time to schedule uninterrupted work time is in the morning.

Schedule administrative tasks. Checking email, listening to voicemails, updating your company’s social media—these “little” things can really eat into your productive time. That’s why I recommend setting aside one or two times each day where you focus on these things—maybe in the morning and then again before you leave the office.

Plan meetings for the afternoon. If you have your creative time in the morning, then you can save administrative tasks—including meetings and conference calls—for the afternoon, which is when a lot of us start to lose a little steam anyway.

Those are just some of the action steps that you can take to make your day more productive!

Why Leaders Fail - Episode 8

Hi this is Dr. Rick Goodman international leadership expert, keynote speaker and author of the Amazon Kindle best-selling book The Solutions Oriented Leader in this episode of the Solutions Oriented Leader Podcast our topic is "Why Leaders Fail"

There are many reasons why leaders fail, however in this episode I'm going to examine four of the most common reasons that I have found over the last 30 years to be the core reasons why leaders fail.

 1.They Lack Self-Awareness

I have discovered that many leaders lack self-awareness of their behaviors or their communication styles. In order to be a successful leader, you have to be aware of your communication and be prepared for life of never-ending improvement.

2.They lack communication skills the drive engagement in connection

Some leaders communicate through social media, email, texts and tweets when real engagement is through connection and conversation.

3.They Fail to Communicate across All Generations

Many leaders fail to communicate across all generations instead of just the ones that they like to spend the most time with. That's the easy thing to do! Stepping out of your comfort zone is a hard thing to do, but that's what true leaders do.

4.They Fail to Connect with People on a Personal and Emotional Level

A leader must touch people personally and emotionally with their vision and their goals. Emotions drive sales, productivity and direction. The key is to be forthcoming and transparent with yourself and your message.

The Solutions Oriented Leader Podcast- Episode 7

I've written so many times about the importance of company culture and in fact many of my keynote speeches recently are focused on that general theme also on how it can be a tool for your recruiting how it helps with engagement and how it improves performance and gives your company and your team the competitive edge in order to compete in today's very competitive environment.

As a business leader you can't just overhaul your old company culture with a simple decree, you can't just say this is what we’re going to be doing moving forward especially if you been doing it differently for many years.

Even before we implement a program to begin to change the culture in any organization, we first must assess what some of weakest areas that need improvement may be found.

It has been my experience as a consultant who has implemented transformational leadership systems into companies around the world successfully for over thirty years that there are four common areas that we all need to focus on to improve workplace culture.

Here are a few:

Ensure that employees are empowered to make decisions:

  • Employees quickly get discouraged when they feel like they don’t have the ability to make decisions.

Align your employees with the mission of the company

  • Show each person how his or her role aligns with the big picture.

Allow your employees to innovate

  • One of the hallmarks of a strong company culture is that employees feel like they have room to try new things and potentially fail. If your response to failure is punishment, employees will never try anything daring or new.

Create a culture of feedback.

  • Your team members want to feel like they can come to you with their new ideas and projects. Be willing to listen and hear them out without getting defensive and give them honest feedback.

Once you have assessed how you are doing there are a few simple steps that you can take to start improving your workplace culture immediately.

      1.Talk to your employees.

Simply by involving your employees in regular communication, you’ve already made your culture better.

     2.Be Flexible.

Think about ways to inject some flexibility into your employee experience.

     3.Encourage professional development.

This can be as simple as providing some flexibility for employees who want to pursue some continuous education courses.

     4.Recognize employees.

There are a number of ways in which you can recognize employees, whether it’s by giving them the day off on their birthday; creating an Employee of the Month honor; or simply giving public shout-outs for employees who make a difference.

    5.Make room for innovation.

Consider ways in which you can give your team members more room to try new things and innovate new solutions—without the fear of failure. Often, this is what gets people excited about coming into work.

7 Ways To Grow Your Leadership Skills - Episode 5 - Dr. Rick Goodman

Hi this is Dr. Rick Goodman and welcome to another episode to solutions oriented leader podcast today

I'm going to share with you seven ways that you can grow your leadership skills right now to achieve world-class results.

Sometimes I am asked by new leaders and  people that are just getting opportunities to grow especially new college graduates how do I get ahead what's important for me to learn?

I was just reading a study from Price Waterhouse Coopers that 77% of new CEOs are looking for two key skills and those skills are innovation and creativity. What I've also found out is that leaders are not born, leaders are developed!

Sometimes you can have somebody with natural leadership skills, however, most of us out there have got to learn to develop our skills on a regular basis. I will also let you know that my skills were not very good right from the beginning.

In my new book The Solutions Oriented Leader I discuss how I went through over 200 front desk assistants my first two years of practice because my communication skills were quite poor and what I was missing is one common key that I've seen that is missing from so many would-be leaders on this planet and that is self-awareness!

It took me over 200 people revolving through my doors and one employee who came into my office and said if you ever speak to me like that again I'm out here for me to realize that it wasn't them it was me!

I needed to work on my communication skills so one of the first things that I decided to do was go around and meet people that were doing the things that I wanted to do! They were the leaders that I wanted to be and they also possessed certain skills and the first skill that they possessed was a self-awareness.

One of the first things that you could do in order to improve your leadership skills is take a leadership assessment go get out there and assess yourself. You can use a DISC assessment or you can go to the solutions oriented leader.com and take the free leadership style assessment

When we are doing consulting and coaching with individuals and corporations, we give people assessments right up front!

The Solutions Oriented Leader Book Review by Jess Todtfeld CEO of Succes...

The Solutions Oriented Leader Podcast with Dr. Rick Goodman Episode 2

Dr. Rick Goodman has a conversation with World Series Championship Manager Jack McKeon of the Florida Marlins on what it takes to be a champion on and off the field. This was one of my favorite interviews and Jack McKeon shares his knowledge of what it truly takes to be successful on and off the field.

This interview took place in 2017 and rings true today. I am so happy that I am able to share this with you today!

Jack McKeon was a catcher in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, beginning in 1949. He debuted with the Greenville Pirates, hitting .251 with 49 RBI. In 1950, McKeon hit .333 in a brief sample with the York White Roses but spent almost all of the year with the Gloversville-Johnstown Glovers, earning $225 per month. He only hit .215/~.284/.239 in 72 games. He was hit in the head by one pitch and needed stitches and also badly injured his knee at second base. McKeon almost lost his life that year. After his knee injury, he was ordered home to recuperate and missed the Friday train the team wanted him to take. The train arrived two minutes before an explosion claimed 33 lives.

In 1951, Jack was in the military and was player-manager for the Sampson Air Force Base team, which won the Air Force championship. The next year, he returned to pro baseball and batted .218/~.352/.285 for the Hutchinson Elks and showed improved walk ability and defense (.987 fielding) from his 1950 season.

In 1953, with the Burlington-Graham Pirates, he caught 139 of the team's 140 games, but hit only .181. The next year, he hit just .133 for Burlington-Graham and .207 with Hutchinson.

In 1955, McKeon managed the Fayetteville Highlanders for two months between Aaron Robinson and Jack Sanford. He was only 24 and hit .169 as a part-time player. He managed in the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twinschain from 1956 to 1964. He continued to play throughout the 1950s. He hit .170 with the Missoula Timberjacks in 1956, .217/~.357/.281 in 1957 and .263 with a career-high 8 homers and 51 RBI in 1958, his best offensive season. He hit .100 for the 1959 Fox Cities Foxes. From 1965 to 1967, he scouted for the Twins organization for three years. In 1968 he was the manager of the co-op High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms.

He managed the Omaha Royals for four years, before taking over the Kansas City Royals. He piloted the Richmond Braves in 1976. McKeon began 1977 as the Oakland A's manager, but was replaced by Bobby Winkles in June, then replaced Winkles in May of 1978.

He was the skipper of the Denver Bears in 1979, then scouted for the San Diego Padres in 1980. Nicknamed "Trader Jack" from his days as the Padres General Manager from 1981 to 1988, he then managed the team from May 1988 to July 1990.

President George W. Bush shakes hands with Marlins' skipper Jack McKeon while hosting the 2003 World Series champs

McKeon managed the Cincinnati Reds from mid-1997 to 2000, then took over the Florida Marlins in 2003. He became the oldest manager (72) to win a World Series when his Marlins won the championship in 2003. He resigned as the club's manager after the 2005 season.

His name came up as a potential replacement as soon as Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez announced his resignation on June 192011 with the team in a 1-17 tailspin. At 80, McKeon became the second-oldest manager in in major league history, after Connie Mack, who was 88 when he managed his last game. He was expected to finish out the season, with a new manager to take over in 2012 when the Marlins moved to a new ballpark. "I'll probably manage until I'm 95," he quipped after his return to the dugout, His first move was to bench star SS Hanley Ramirez, who had infuriated previous managers with his sometimes lackadaisical play, because "(I) didn't like the way he was running yesterday." The Marlins were losers in his first game, 2-1 to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on June 20th for their franchise-record 11th straight loss, and their 19th in their last 20 games. He won for the first time the next night, 5-2 over the Angels as Ramirez was back in the line-up. As expected, on September 26th, he announced he would not be returning the following season; his announcement preceded by a few hours the appointment of Ozzie Guillen as manager of the renamed Miami Marlins for the following year.

In January 2019, he was still active at the age of 88 as he was hired by the Washington Nationals to serve as a senior adviser to GM Mike Rizzo.

In 17 years as a minor league manager his teams were a collective 1,105-1,177, while his major league teams have gone 1,011-940.

His brother, Bill McKeon, was a minor league catcher in the Milwaukee Braves system, and his son, Kasey McKeon, is a former minor league player and served as an executive with the Colorado Rockies and the Nationals. Another son, Kelly McKeon, was a scout. He is also the Father-In-Law of Greg Booker and grandfather of Zach Booker.
