The Alex Project - The Laws of Success "Accurate Thinking"

According to author Napoleon Hill, the eleventh lesson in his proclaimed Law of Success is the most important, most interesting, and unfortunately the most difficult lesson to present to the reader. Accurate Thinking involves two paired ideas.

The first idea is separating fact from information, and the second is separating this fact into two classes. These classes are important and unimportant facts, or relevant and irrelevant facts.

Hill emphasizes the great importance of being able to make this distinction, because the accurate thinker will not believe anything he or she hears. Instead, he or she will arrive at a conclusion only after careful and thoughtful analysis.

The key to accurate thinking, according to Hill, is what he calls "creative thought", which allows us to tap into "infinite intelligence." The major step towards creative thought is autosuggestion, otherwise known as suggestions you make to yourself. The subconscious mind records the suggestions we send it, and invoke the aid of infinite intelligence to turn these suggestions into action.

The lesson concludes by reminding us that the subconscious mind accepts any and all suggestions, both constructive or destructive, and cautions us to be careful what we suggest. You must only suggest facts and no slander, for slander is poisonous to the subconscious mind and ruins this creative thought.

The Alex Project - Laws of Success "A Pleasing Personality"

The tenth lesson in Napolean Hill’s Law of Success reading course discusses the importance of having a “pleasing personality”. Hill defines this as "a personality that attracts", and proceeds to explore the causes of this attraction.

One of the most crucial ways to initiate this attraction is by taking a genuine interest in other people. This is not arguing that for an average salesman, cheap flattery will serve as this genuine interest. Rather, by forming a relationship with a potential customer prior to the sale, the attraction is initiated and results in a more comfortable environment for both the salesman and his possible customer.

Hill concludes this lesson by discussing character, and ways to implement his formula that will result in this character being built up. He suggests that first, imagine those people who have the type of character you wish to possess, and then proceed to take on those qualities through self-suggestion. Create in your imagination a meeting with them, and then write out a detailed statement of the qualities you wish to assume from them. It is important to note that it is vital to the process that you actually see these figures seated around an imaginary table. Then, keep your thoughts focused in a positive manner as you listen to their advice and guidance, while keeping in mind the kind of person you would like to be. Also, make it a point to never forget to give praise to the genuine good qualities you see in others. Hill promises the reader that this will bring the law of attraction into play almost magically.

The Alex Project: Laws of Success "The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For"

Napoleon Hill explores another topic that is vital to achieving success in the ninth lesson of this book, titled “The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For.” Essentially self-explanatory, this rare characteristic often results in countless opportunities for a person, and will add much to one’s credibility and reputation.

The easiest way for you to develop this habit is by ensuring that you are working in a profession that is enjoyable to you. According to Hill, some people love their work, but many hate what they do for a living. You are most efficient and will more quickly and easily succeed when engaged in work that you love, or work that you perform on for some person that you love.

If you are doing the type of work you love, it is no hardship to do more and better work than you are paid for.  Hill mentions two benefits of doing what you love: happiness (which is priceless) and earning far more money. He also states that family and friends may disapprove of following your passion, but you must proceed onward, regardless of the opinions of others.

The Alex Project: Laws of Success "Self Control"

The eighth lesson in Napolean Hill’s reading course discusses self-control, and its great importance to achieving success. According to Hill, a lack of self-control resembles the unharnessed lightning of an electrical storm – it may strike anywhere; it may destroy life and property. Enthusiasm arouses action, and self-control directs that action in a constructive and positive way. It may interest one to know that the overwhelming percentage of prison inmates remain in jail because they lacked the necessary self-control to channel their energies in a constructive manner. Conversely, the one common quality of successful people is self-control.

No one can manage to control others unless they can first control themselves. This therefore makes a lack of self-control one of the average salesperson's most damaging weaknesses. Hill states that the primary ways to maintain self-control is by not forming opinions without knowing the necessary facts, and by not spending beyond one’s means. Self-control also enables a person to prevent striking back at those who offend you, as well as other destructive habits which result in a waste of energy through non-productive efforts.

The main point that Hill wants the reader to get out of this lesson is that you have the “power to control your own thoughts and direct them to do your bidding.” Self-control is simply a matter of thought control, and we certainly have complete control over our own thoughts. Don’t allow outside forces to influence you excessively, but rather think for yourself and with rock-solid precision.

The Alex Project: Laws of Success "Enthusiasm"

In the seventh lesson in Law of Success, Napolean Hill discusses the great importance of “enthusiasm”, and how integrating enthusiasm into your life will ultimately lead to success. Hill defines enthusiasm as a state of mind that inspires and arouses one to put action into the task at hand." By constantly engaging in life with enthusiasm, the characteristic can be developed and used as a vital force in the work environment. In order to develop this potential enthusiasm, Hill argues that you must do the kind of work that you like, and make sure your actions are leading toward the achievement of your definite chief aim. Enthusiasm is a contagious characteristic, which magnifies its power. That is, it makes a large enough impression on others in order to make them become enthusiastic as well. Enthusiasm can mean using the same word choice but stated in a different manner, as people become more or less motivated based on how something is said to them. Hill emphasizes this fact, as it is not so much what you say as it is the tone and manner in which you say it that makes a lasting impression.

In order to truly master the quality of enthusiasm, Hill stresses the idea of working for something that you believe in. This will naturally bring out the enthusiastic quality in yourself, as you will be legitimately interested in what you are doing. In his example, Hill discusses how he turned down the most money that was ever offered to him simply because he did not believe in what he was doing. The job was to write articles on a topic that he opposed, and therefore knew he would not be giving his best enthusiastic effort when taking the time to write the articles. When working in an environment or on a project that you genuinely enjoy and believe in, the enthusiasm will begin to come on its own.

The Alex Project: Laws of Success "Imagination"

The sixth “Law of Success” that Napoleon Hill discusses involves the need for imagination. Hill emphasizes this as being one of the most important of the lessons in his book. The chapter on imagination calls for the reader to use the one power that no person can take away from them.

Man has the ability to cheat and slander other men, but a man has no power over any mans imagination. Hill maintains that the idea of daydreaming is not a useless one, but rather that many vital ideas and products were developed through the act of daydreaming. Simple use of imagination has proven to lead to success, with the creation of “Five and Ten Cent Stores”, “Self-Help Grocery Stores”, and even the Panama Canal as evidence.

The main point that Hill intends to emphasize in this lesson is to use your imagination to rearrange old ideas into new combinations. With maximum effort combined with imagination, you can achieve maximum achievement. This is where a “Master Mind” group will become vital, as the collective effort provides for even greater imagination.

The Alex Project: Laws of Success "Initiative & Leadership"

The fifth chapter of The Law of Success, written by Napolean Hill, explores the lesson of initiative and leadership. According to Hill, both of these qualities are much-needed in finding success in life. Initiative is defined in the lesson as "that exceedingly rare quality which impels a person to do what ought to be done without being told to do it."

This is a characteristic which a person can make a habit, and gradually develop as it is utilized on a regular basis. As a person begins to possess the quality of initiative, Hill argues that the quality of leadership develops naturally. Leaders exercise initiative, have a definite chief aim or purpose, and possess the quality of self-confidence, all of which are the reasons why they make great leaders.

One should be warned, however, of the major initiative killer: procrastination. This is the one quality that a person must fight off in order to develop initiative, as a procrastinator lacks the quality of getting things done and taking action, regardless of being told to do so or not. In order to fight off this procrastination, Hill argues that you must form the habit of aggressively and persistently following the objective of your definite chief aim until you achieve it — regardless of how long it takes.

The Alex Project: Laws of Success "The Habit of Saving"

“The Habit of Saving”

In the fourth lesson in his book Law of Success, Napolean Hill discusses the “Habit of Saving”. It is clear that humans are naturally creatures of habit, for when someone forms a habit it becomes a part of their everyday life. Therefore, Hill explains that one must make a habit of saving, which will result in saving becoming an integral part of one becoming successful.

However, one characteristic that a majority of people have is the lack of making a habit of saving, and instead making a habit of spending. Hill discusses that this habit of spending has resulted in many people spending more than they earn, thus making it impossible to build up any form of savings over a period of time. It is crucial to live within your means until you have accumulated enough capital to begin using some of it recreationally.

Nevertheless, no matter how much you are earning at any given time, Hill suggests that you set aside 20% of your income in a savings account. This number will gradually build up until you have established financial independence, and the fear of debt will not be present in your mind.

The Alex Project Part 3 - Self Confidence

Self-Confidence

In his third lesson in The Law of Success, Napolean Hill discusses the idea of “Self-Confidence.” According to Hill, fear is the primary reason that a person falls into failure and poverty. As a result of this idea, a person who can master fear will be successful. A person can work on developing self-confidence by eliminating these fears, which include a fear of poverty, old age, criticism, loss of love of someone, ill health, or of death. In order to master these fears and eliminate them from one’s subconscious, you must work on obtaining mass amounts of organized knowledge. Ignorance and fear are a pair that go hand-in-hand, therefore if ignorance is eliminated, fear is eliminated as well. Self-confidence is a trait which can be developed over time, but is not sufficiently improved until you truly believe Napolean Hill when he writes, “You can do it if you believe you can.”

“A Definite Chief Aim”

The second of Napoleon Hill’s lessons in Law of Success is referred to as “A Definite Chief Aim”, which is exactly what Hill is instructing the reader to find. Hill repeatedly urges the reader to discover his or her natural talents, and to organize, coordinate, and put into use the knowledge gained from experience.

The primary cause of failure in life is to have no definite chief aim, without any attainable goals or plans to accomplish these goals. By finding your “definite chief aim” or “definite chief purpose” in life, Hill argues that this idea will be strongly embedded in the subconscious mind. That is, the idea of accomplishing your “definite chief aim” will soon transform from dream into reality.

What Hill emphasizes the most in this lesson is not just finding your “definite chief aim”, but writing both this idea and the ways that you will accomplish it down somewhere so that you will see it day after day. The result is that this will continue to keep the “definite chief aim” fresh on the mind almost at all times, until it is no longer a fantasy.

Hill closes his second lesson by explaining to the reader that the final step of the “definite chief aim”, which occurs after one has written both the aim and the ways that it will be accomplished, is to find an alliance. This alliance is meant as a support system for your “definite chief aim”, containing people who will cooperate with you in carrying out plans to achieve your goal. Therefore, this alliance should contain people such as a spouse, mother, father, brother, sister, or extremely close friend, who would only bring positivity and confidence in helping you attain your “definite chief aim”.

The Alex Project Part 1 - The "Master Mind"

The “Master Mind”

Napolean Hill begins his volume of work, Law of Success, with a lesson on what he refers to as the “Master Mind.” A “Master Mind”, according to Hill, is defined as “a mind that is developed through the harmonious co-operation of two or more people who ally themselves for the purpose of accomplishing any given task.” From this definition, it seems as though Hill’s idea is that by combining two or more minds in order to accomplish something, the result is a separate mind that contains the knowledge of all of the minds in the group. This mind would therefore be referred to as a “Master Mind”. However, it is not as simple as this. What Hill emphasizes the most, and does so repeatedly throughout the first lesson, is the word HARMONIOUS that is given in the initial definition. A “Master Mind” cannot and will not be formed unless the minds that are involved in the group work in a HARMONIOUS manor. In fact, a “Master Mind” completely disintegrates the moment that the group is joined by just one person that doesn’t have the full co-operation and harmony between all of the other minds involved. In this first lesson, Hill concludes with the idea of education and how important it truly is to a person’s future. According to Hill, “the man who can intelligently use the knowledge possessed by another is as much or more a man of education as the person who merely has the knowledge but does not know what to do with it.” There are many well-educated people in the world who know an abundance of information that they have gathered over many years. However, it is the people who take in this information from many others and put it to good use who find true success.

The Power of the Personal Note

Have you ever gotten a high score in bowling or maybe it will was a perfect score and the teacher wrote a little remark on the page about your accomplishments?

My question is how did it make you feel and did you share that note or score with anyone or everyone? I remember hanging that score on the fridge to this day and I still have some of those report cards the ones with the great messages as well as a the not so great.

My point is that it is more important than ever to reach out and touch our clients, customers and friends in a more personal way!

Just recently I was in St. Louis visiting my kids and was invited to my friend Doug’s house for a BBQ engagement function for his son and future daughter-in-law.

That afternoon we went shopping at Plaza Frontenac in St. Louis. When we walked into Neiman Marcus we were helped by a woman named Karen Gillis who was absolutely fabulous!

In no time she had a beautiful present picked out which work very well for my AAA personality, but she also showered my wife with gifts and a box of Godiva Chocolates. To say I was impressed is an understatement! I was overwhelmed by her excellent customer service and looked forward to shopping with her again!

If that was not enough two weeks later back in Florida I received a personal letter in the mail addressed to me from Neiman Marcus. To my surprise it was a note from Karen thanking me for my business and giving me her personal hours and contact information.

After receiving that personal note I can tell you that Karen is the only salesperson that I will work with at that location!

Only a few weeks ago I took my mother and her boyfriend out for her birthday to the Capitol Grill in Boca Raton, Florida. When we arrived at the table it was decorated with a personal note for my mother acknowledging her birthday.

Our server Isabel came to our table with glasses of champagne to toast my mom’s birthday. The meal and the service was magnificent and we left completely full and happy, but once again that is not the end to the story.

A week later I received a personal note from our server is Isabel and in it she told me how honored she was to have been able to make my mother’s birthday special. Just like Karen from Neiman Marcus she also stated in her note that she looked forward to serving us again in the future!

Again I can tell you the next time I go to the Capitol Grill in Boca Raton Florida I'm asking for Isabel to wait on our table.

The bottom line is two great companies, well-trained employees and satisfied customers who will return again and again. This Is the Power of the Personal Note!

I Am Totally Healthy I Just Have Cancer!

The moment I heard those words come out of my wife's mouth I was totally blown away, but why should I be that was three years ago and my wife had already been battling cancer for three years!

The doctor turned and looked at my wife is if she was out of her mind, but I knew this was one of the toughest women on the planet. She knew she was in the fight of her life and that a positive attitude was the key to her success.

Personally I did not know if my wife was kidding herself or truly believed her own words.
However I have come to know that Jackie Klein Goodman is one of the toughest and most positive people on the planet. She goes and goes and keeps on challenging herself and others through the example that she sets every day!

Are you ready to keep on keeping on in this economy?

Because how you look at your life every day will determine the road you will travel. When life has you down are you grateful for all the little things, those special moments and times of reflection that will keep you in balance and take you to the next level.

I just came back from an awesome day on the 17 mile Drive with Jackie and my daughter Jamie reflecting enjoying and observing. Treasure all of life's moments and focus on how you can appreciate every second of every day and make a difference to others!

Check out my new blog Are you focused on the 10 Percenter's in Your Life? at:

http://ping.fm/WiwW1
Are You Focused on the 10 Percenter’s?

Are you focused on the 10 Percenter's in your life? You know these people they are the type that would win the winning lottery ticket and still complain about paying taxes. They generally see the cup as half empty and always focus on the trivial instead of the big picture!

You know some of these people maybe even intimately. Some of them are your ex spouses or significant others, some of them are your in-laws or your brothers or sisters and some of them are your colleagues, your boss and your children.

So why do we focus on the few instead of the masses?

When I was actively practicing chiropractic I may have had 100 patients come to my office in a day and 99 of them were thrilled with the service that we provided and one would complain and leave and tell us that they would never come back again! At that time in my life I would focus and obsess about that one client who prevented me from hearing and receiving the love that my other patients were giving me.

How many of you out there have experienced the same scenario in your lives?

Today I was doing my workout in Marco Island Florida. Since there is no boardwalk to skate on things can get a little dicey on the open road even with the speed limit set at 35 mph. I decided to skate against incoming traffic in order to see the cars coming at me and for them in turn to see me. This was a perfect test for my 10 percent rule.

With two oncoming lanes which cars would kindly move over to the open lane and which ones would come directly at me. Also what would my reaction be either way? The good news is that I am happy to be alive and well to report my results and here is how it went on my eight-mile trek!

With just about 200 cars total passing and coming at me only 2 did not move our 10 Percenter's! One happened early on so I decided to salute the drivers and give them a thumbs up in advance of our approaching each other and The Results Were AMAZING!

The driver either smiled, gave me the thumbs up back or saluted! Only two people threw their arms up in disgust and we have to figure that they are in the family of 10 Percenter’s.

The Good News is that it is currently 9:30 am on Saturday July 2, 2011 I got my workout in and made almost 200 people smile!

Have a Safe Holiday!

The Art of Creating A Successful Team

The quality of your office is going to be determined by the quality of the team that assists you in providing health care to your patients. There are a number of things that she can do in order to build and strengthen your health care team.

People do business with people who they like, who are like them it is important that we understand this concept. It is more important than ever before, that there is a positive chemistry among your staff members. The more your staff members enjoy working with each other, the better care your patients will receive.

So here are three things you can do right away, in order to build and create a successful team that is ready to assist you in providing health care to your patients.

1: You must have regular staff meetings. Although most people don’t like to be in meetings they’re important in order to set goals, solve problems and get everybody on the same page.

2: Design group activities that involve all staff members in a setting other than your office. Make it fun! This will not only help team members bond with each other. It should also help them bond with you

3: Constantly catch your team members doing the right thing and let them know how much you appreciate it. Then tell the rest of the staff members, what a great job that person did and be specific. Everyone wants Love, Appreciation and : Respect, if you give them those three things you will have a group of highly motivated quality staff members on your team.

The Simple Secret of Success!

I believe that messages come to us from all different encounters that we have in life and yesterday was no exception! I was driving home from visiting my 89 year old grandmother who is a wealth of knowledge and wisdom in her own right when it comes to all issues regarding life and success when I decided to stop and get some fresh squeezed orange juice from Bob Roth’s famous groves in Davie Florida.

When I walked in I noticed an older man sitting on a golf cart where the samples of oranges and grapfruit sat on the table for customers to enjoy. After I purchased my orange juice I noticed the picture on the Jukebox as I walked out.The picture was of the old man was sitting on the golf cart.

It said happy 100 birthday to Al Roth!

The man was the father of the owner of the groves who had recently turned 100 and was still out there greeting customers. I needed to ask him a question that was most important to me and one that I might be able to share with my clients and friends alike.

I went over to Al and introduce myself and asked him:

” What did he feel was the secret to success”?

He looked at me and said it’s very simple. He said, “you need to learn to control your subconscious mind”.

With all the books that I have read and all the speeches that I’ve delivered I have stressed the philosophy and the importance of the subconscious mind when it comes to success.

Now Al Roth and his hundred years on the planet confirmed that I was on the right track!

Your ability to control your mind and focus your thoughts is paramount to your success in life. We never know when these little secrets or life lessons are going to come upon us, so be open and aware at all times.

You may get one of life’s greatest lessons even if it is at the local orange grove!

Super Bowl 2009 A Day of Excitement a Day of Regrets

If you're like me. You were probably sitting in front of your TV set for most of the day watching the Super Bowl pregame show on NBC. The one piece that I found most interesting was the one that was done on wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. It was interesting to me because I had read only about the ballplayer Larry Fitzgerald not the person.

From what everyone says and what became apparent in the game is that he is truly a gifted athlete. However, what really caught my attention was the story that revolves around his mother and the fact that he hadn't spoken to her for months leading up in until untimely death.

Larry Fitzgerald's mom had breast cancer. This is something I truly understand since I've been living with it in my house for the last three years. Breast cancer can be devastating to one's family, breaking relationships apart and killing dreams.

That's if we let it! In our house, we decided not to let it kill our dreams, but expand what we can bring to the table.

This philosophy has helped us to educate others about the treatments available to them and the latest technology in the fight against breast cancer.

What I really learned from the Larry Fitzgerald interview last night was the importance of family and relationships and how short life can really be. Here today and gone tomorrow is a saying that I heard a lot while growing up. Unfortunately, it is a reality in his life.

So take a look at your loved ones and give them a big hug, while you have a chance because life is truly short and that was the most valuable lesson I learned on Super Bowl Sunday.

Kurt Warner Is Living a Championship Life

It's like déjà vu all over again for me. It was the 1999-2000 NFL season and I was one of the physicians for the St. Louis Rams. In fact, I wrote about my experiences in my recently published book, Living a Championship Life "A Game Plan for Success". The purpose of the book was to demonstrate the common traits that all championship athletes and teams have in common with the world's most successful people.

I I found that they all had a game plan for the ultimate victory and that anybody on the planet could achieve the same results. They just needed a strategic game plan and an ability to maintain their focus, just like the pros.

The first chapter of my book is titled "Attitude Is Everything"In it I described an athlete who impressed me by the way he carried himself everywhere he went and his positive attitude about life. His name was Kurt Warner. "An individual, who knew no bounds-with an attitude of gratitude for just being able to play the game-took over as the starting quarterback after an injury to Trent Green."

At the University of Northern Iowa, Warner watched two quarterbacks battle for the starting position until it was his senior year. He hung in there and didn't give up until he was finally given a chance to start his last season. In that season he was named the Gateway Conference offensive player of the year. He was released by the Green Bay Packers in 1994 just before the regular season began. Then onto his success in the Arena football league where he was named as one of the 20 best players of all time.

Then it was off to the tryout for the Chicago Bears until an injury to his throwing elbow caused by a venomous spider bite received during his honeymoon prevented from attending training camp.

Next stop St. Louis Rams, and we all know the story there. Super Bowl MVP, hero and class act. So what happened? A short stint with the Giants, and then off to NFL purgatory in Arizona or so we thought.

People forget the quality of the man named Kurt Warner. Someone who understands that attitude is everything and does what it takes to get things done. So this Sunday we're going to get to see a future Hall of Famer at the helm. I'm excited for him, but I'm more excited to have been able to witness the story of a man who understands that attitude is everything. If you want to be successful in life!

Memorial Home Health Care People Making a Difference

Today I had the Pleasure of Speaking at Memorial Home Health Care in Hollywood, Florida. With all the troubles in the world regarding our economy, job losses and the housing crisis we face, it's good to be able to count on people that are around to serve the health needs of others.

We have to remember in life that's not what happens to us. It's what we do with what happens to us, That makes a big difference!

It was refreshing for me to see that there are people in this world that are totally focused on helping others with their health care needs. This in my opinion, could be the highest form of service that there is on the planet .

I want to congratulate the entire organization At Memorial Home Health Care as they strive for excellence in serving the needs of others.

A Super Bowl Champion Is a Champion Once Again!

In my keynote programs I regularly tell stories about individuals I know who have achieved great things in life. In fact in my book Living a Championship Life "A Game Plan for Success" I have a chapter on one of my good friends and former patients Michael Jones of the St. Louis Rams.

As some of you might remember Michael Jones made the winning tackle in the Super Bowl in one of the most memorable plays in sports history. However in the book I spoke about Michael's determination, integrity and character in all aspects of his life.

Well Michael did it again on Friday night November 29, 2008 as the interim coach of the Hazelwood East football team he helped the Spartans to win the Missouri class five championship game. The interesting thing is he did it in typical fashion winning the game on the last play with no time left his quarterback threw a Hail Mary that was caught in the end zone to give his team the victory 39-34 which was the schools third title.

Michael is an example of all that's good about pro football and how an athlete can inspire a team and a community to achieve greatness and I am glad to call him my friend.

We Are in a Recession No Duh!

It amazed me to watch the local and national news last night and have our so-called experts tell us that we're in a recession. Do they think that the American people are so stupid that we haven't figured this out a long time ago?

I know there's a common adage that he who yells loudest might just be believed. Unfortunately there are a good number of Americans that truly believed President Bush when he said we were not in a recession.

I think it's imperative that each one of us as Americans not only begin to think for ourselves but we should also be listening to Jimmy Cricket and let our conscience be your guide not the talking heads are politicians who attempt to tell us what we should be thinking!

A Dichotomy of Opinions "The Problems Facing The Major Networks"

I don't know if you're like me but as an American citizen looking forward to the opportunity to vote in the upcoming election. We are facing a number of issues most importantly the economy and the pessimistic attitude of most Americans towards the elections.

For just one time I would like to watch a news broadcast without getting the spin from one of the talking heads. As an independent voter and communication specialist I want to listen to what's truly being said . This is why God gave me two ears and a brain to think, I resent being told by my the news channels and I just heard something different.

Anybody who's watched Fox news knows that this channel leans towards the Republican point of view. When I watch CNN I am surprised lately at how liberal their stance is when reporting the media events of the day, it's almost as if they were a Democratic talking head. This was truly evident in the debate last night especially with the new twist of scoring the debate that the channel uses.

I particularly got a kick out of Roland Martin! When it was time for Barak Obamas opening remark Mr. Martin hit the plus one button when Senator Obama said thank you Hofstra University. His scorecard looked like a football game score 54-40 something in favor Obama. If the sender breathes does he get points?

Finally I turned to NBC news where Tom Browkow and Brian Williams were discussing the debate. I believe that Tom Browkow was the first news man on all the channels that I flipped through last night that actually had an unbiased opinion! This frankly was the most refreshing 20 minutes of news I watched all day.

I truly believe that the American people are smart enough to make their own decisions about their lives without the interference of government or the positive and negative spins that all news reporting agencies have been using in this election.

It almost makes you want to turn off the news and watch a good movie!

That's if Hollywood can make some good movies these days!

Effective Employee Evaluations

I was recently Inteviewed by the American Chiropractic Association regarding my opinion on performing effective employee evaluations. I think that the article was well written so I would like to share it with you!

Effective Employee EvaluationsTake the awkwardness out of employee evaluations with written job descriptions and objective performance appraisals.
By Rebecca Jones

Jason Dauer wasn’t sure how to respond when an employee in his father’s chiropractic office crumpled up a training memo and threw it on the ground.

“She got really angry,” recalls Dauer, the office manager, who at the time oversaw a staff of four in Torrance, Calif. “It was just some points that I thought would help her do her job better, but she responded by basically attacking the doctor’s behavior. I picked it up and told her that I was going to put it in her file, whether she chose to accept it or not.”

Eventually, that employee was fired after several more reprimands for her behavior. But when she applied for unemployment, her claim was denied—precisely because Dauer was able to document the history of written reprimands she’d received and produce her poor job evaluations.

The evaluation process with that employee made for some tense moments for Dauer, but in the end, his diligence proved sound business practice.

Fear of conflict is very likely one big reason that a recent survey of ACA members revealed that 35 percent do not conduct regular formal job evaluations for their office staff. “We want people to like us and love us, and so we don’t correct some things that need to be corrected,” says Rick Goodman of Pembroke Pines , Fla. , a chiropractor-turned-business-consultant, motivational speaker and the author of Living a Championship Life: A Game Plan for Success. “We’ll see someone making mistakes, but we’re not willing to step up and talk about it because we fear they’ll leave if we do. But I would rather not have somebody there than to have somebody in my office who was not doing the right thing.”

Fortunately for most employees, job evaluations not only aren’t painful; they’re beneficial for all parties involved. Done right, they can lead to happier employees, happier patients and a smoother-running office.

“The reason we do them in the first place is to set goals for an employee, to judge the results achieved and to create performance criteria that can be met and measured,” Goodman says. “A lot of times we may find that the goals we’ve set are unreachable, and one of the major reasons for burnout is that people are given responsibilities they simply aren’t able to perform.”

Timely, regular and written job evaluations should be part of every chiropractic practice, and should include front office as well as professional staff.

Put It in Writing

Step one is creating a written job description, advises Goodman. The description can be narrow to include only those things the chiropractor wants and expects an individual to perform. (“I don’t want my front desk staff answering billing questions. Our billing manager will answer the billing questions,” says Timothy Nelson, DC, who oversees a staff of 13 at Heritage Health, an integrated healthcare center in Centennial, Colo. ) Or it can be broadened by including a catch-all clause such as “and any other duties deemed necessary.”

The key point is to put it in writing and have employees sign it. Over time, as office personnel and duties change, keep updating job descriptions. “We have our staff write their own job descriptions,” Goodman says. “Who knows better than them what their job is?”
Once the expectations for an employee are clear, appraising performance becomes much more objective and quantifiable.

“Focus on performance and not personalities,” Goodman says. “Focus on valid, relevant concrete issues rather than just subjective emotions or feelings.”

At a minimum, employees should receive such evaluations yearly. Goodman does employee appraisals twice a year. Dr. Nelson does them every 90 days. Whether the reviews are frequent or infrequent, the person conducting the evaluation should follow certain rules for effective interviewing:

1. Listen to what employees say.

2. Acknowledge their feelings.

3. Repeat back to employees what you’ve heard them say, so there’s no misunderstanding, and have them do the same for you.

4. If a problem arises, focus on the problem, not the person.

“You want to stop, look and listen,” says Goodman. “Stop the interaction before it can become argumentative or unproductive. Make sure you don’t get angry. Don’t get defensive. Don’t blame others. Don’t lecture. Look squarely at the problem and describe it as you see it to employees. Then listen to their suggestions and explore ways to solve it together. A lot of times, employees will give me solutions that I didn’t have in my head.”

Turn the Tables

Dr. Nelson believes it’s equally important to allow employees the chance to assess their own performance and working conditions.

“I ask them how they think they’re doing professionally and what they see as problems,” he says. “I give them three days to think about it before we meet. I tell them, ‘Don’t tell me I don’t like working with so-and-so.’ But I have them tell me what they do and don’t like about their job and what could be done to improve the job. Over the years, I’ve discovered that what I may think is important really isn’t important to them, and things they think are important would never have occurred to me.”

Finally, discuss any plans for improvement and set new goals. Goodman suggests focusing on three to five written goals for the coming year. “If you give them a lot of things to improve, they won’t be too motivated, and they’ll end up leaving. We want to quantify specifically what’s expected. Say, ‘I expect us to hit this goal, and this goal and that goal. What do you think is the best way to go about that?’ Different people may have different ways of achieving the same goal.”

How to Create a Successful Team

The quality of your office is going to be determined by the quality of the team that assists you in providing health care to your patients. There are a number of things that she can do in order to build and strengthen your health care team.

People do business with people who do like, who are like them if we understand this concept. It is more important than ever before, that there is a positive chemistry among your staff members. The more your staff members enjoy working with each other better care your patients will receive.

So here are three things you can do right away, in order to build and create a successful team that is ready to assist you in providing health care to your patients.

1: You must have regular staff meetings. Although most people don't like to be in meetings they're important in order to set goals, solve problems and get everybody on the same page.

Let Go Jets!

Today's the big day I'm up early and I can't hardly sleep! Today could be the ultimate showdown at Dolphins Stadium and I'll be in the house. It Brett Favre versus Chad Pennington I think the football gods had this planned out right.

With hurricane Ike bearing down on South Florida it should be a balmy 90° at game time. There's nothing like a Dolphins Jets game except this game will come with historic proportions. I was fortunate enough to be in New York when the Jets acquired Favre not knowing that the first game of the season would be in my own backyard 10 minutes from my house.

The other big unknown in this game in my opinion is Ricky Williams. Will he show up to be the outstanding running back he was in his first years with a Dolphins and increase the value of the jersey I have sitting in my son's room in early tank it and go down in the first game like he did last year? Time will tell, but anyway you look at it at NFL football Dolphins versus Jets Game On!

Heineken And Burns House Companies, What a Fantastic Experience!

I just got back from a fabulous experience down in the Bahamas working with Heineken http://www.heineken.com/ and the Burns House Companies the number one distributor in the Bahamas!

The topic was change management and is as anybody knows changes isn't always easy. However this enthusiastic group of managers, supervisors and team leaders took on the task and I know they're going to achieve outstanding results!

This is the third time I've had an opportunity to work with Heineken and I have to say that whether I'm speaking in St. Lucia, Puerto Rico, or the Bahamas every person I've met in this organization is first rate. That's not easy to say in this day and age so it must be reflection on the people and the product.

Each morning, I delivered a keynote speech on leadership called Striving for Excellence to their salesforce and marketing executives. I was received enthusiastically and afterwards signed hundreds of copies of my new book Living a Championship Life A Game Plan for Success. Today I'm thinking about my friends down there in the Bahamas, who are about to experience hurricane Ike.

I know with their positive attitude and strength of leadership they will not only withstand the winds of Ike, but also the winds of change!

Healthy Tension Makes a Healthy Candidate

I was recently reading an article in the South Florida Sun Sentinel http://sun-sentinal.com/. The article focused on how Senator John McCain liked to solicit advice from Senators, campaign consultants, and even his former deputy press secretary. The article went on to focus on how McCain even publicly disagreed with his own spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker after she used a line of attack against Senator Barack Obamaa that he had approved.

In a recent interview, McCain said "You've got to have competing opinions, I think a certain amount of tension is very healthy and a certain amount of different views are also good for a candidate or a President. After just having finished, the New York Times best-selling book Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin it is most evident that one of our greatest presidents Abraham Lincoln, filled his cabinet with advisers who not only did not like each other on many levels, but also had opposing views on how the country should be run.

Had it not been for the strong leadership skills of Abraham Lincoln and his ability to bring together individuals who had opposing views, sometimes causing great amounts of tension in the Cabinet and in the White House we might not be the country that we are today. I would like to see healthy tension in opposing views with whomever is elected as our next president. How about you?

Is Your Customer Service Losing You Money ?

I have a favorite market that like to shop at when I'm looking for fresh meat or fresh seafood, and it's right around the block from my house. I've been there on a number of occasions when I was served by a gentleman who obviously did not want to be there. In the past I had paid special attention in order to build rapport with this individual and even maybe put a little smile on his face.

Yesterday I decided to run over to the market, and hopefully arrive before they closed at seven o'clock. I walked through the door at 6:15 p.m. and proceeded to the vegetable and fruit area of the store. As I was shopping I glanced over to seafood section and glanced over at Mr. Happy the gentleman who had served me on previous occasions.

He had that look of, I don't want to be here, I can't wait to get out! I walked over to him and asked him how he was doing and he barely answered me with a shrug. I then picked out some red snapper and was looking to make another purchase. The fresh tuna in the section looked pretty good. However, I was interested in a smaller piece, one that he could cut fresh that would meet my needs with almost 40 minutes left in his day. He looked up at me and said I can't cut you a piece of fish you'll have to take what's here. He then proceeded to pick up bigger and bigger pieces asking me if I wanted any of those, He just wasn't listening!

I looked at him and said, no, I think I'll pass and then I preceded over to the checkout counter without making any additional purchases. Here's my question; How many people that day, or this month, decided on passing on getting more food because of this individuals lousy customer service.
It's unfortunate, but when customers leave us because of poor service they generally don't tell us in advance. Your customer service can increase your business or kill your business very rapidly. It's more important than ever before to look for customer service oriented people when you're involved in the hiring process. With increasing competition to businesses that have the best customer service will survive and thrive in our market today.
